On October 28th (local time), Apple began distributing a series of OS updates, including iOS 18.1 . This update also provides some of the features of Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system that uses generative AI, as a beta version.
“Apple Intelligence and Siri” added to Settings
Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPad with A17 Pro or M1 or later, and Mac with M1 or later.
It will be available in Japanese “next year,” but it appears it will also be usable in Japan if you set the device and Siri language to English (US).
Even if you leave it in Japanese, the “Apple Intelligence and Siri” item will appear in Settings, but it cannot be used in Japanese.
To use Apple Intelligence, set your language settings to English, select [Settings] → [Apple Intelligence & Siri], tap “Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist”, and tap “Join Waitlist” on the next screen. If you are accepted, you will receive a notification and the download of Apple Intelligence will begin. (As of the time of writing, the download has not yet started.)
Joining the Waitlist
According to the support page , activation can usually be achieved within a few hours of joining the waitlist, but wait times can vary.

In the Photos app, natural language search lets you find photos by describing what you’re looking for, such as “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye T-shirt.”
In Mail, emails deemed important to you, like same-day lunch invitations or boarding passes, will appear as a new section at the top of your inbox. Across your inbox, you can see summaries without opening the message, and for longer threads, tap or click “Summary” to see the relevant details.
