Geo Holdings announced the results of a “Survey on Used Smartphones” on September 20th. The survey was conducted among 1,605 Geo app members from September 6th to September 9th.

“iPhone SE (1st generation)” remains popular

The main device they use is the iPhone at 56.1% and Android at 43.9%, and the next device they plan to buy is also the iPhone at 56.7% and Android at 43.3%, almost the same. The most common reason for both is “because I’m used to using it,” at over 70%.

When 901 people who mainly use iPhones were asked about the model they use, the most popular was the “iPhone 13” series at 15.6%, followed by the “iPhone SE (1st generation)” at 15.3%, the “iPhone 12” series at 11.7%, and the “iPhone 15” series at 11.3%. The “iPhone SE” series, which is no longer supported by the OS, is also thought to be popular due to its home button, Touch ID (fingerprint authentication), and its light weight and compact size compared to other series.

What model of iPhone do you mainly use?

35.3% said they were “likely” to consider buying a used smartphone the next time they buy one, with the most common reason being “because it’s cheap” at over 80%, followed by “because it has all the necessary functions even though it’s used” at 48.7%. Of the 64.7% who said they were “not” likely to consider buying a used smartphone, the top reasons given were “because I’m reluctant to buy used products,” “because it seems like it will break easily,” and “because I’m worried about dirt/scratches.”

Possibilities and reasons for considering a used smartphone

35.2% of people have sold or traded in their smartphones/cell phones, and over 70% of them said that the reason was because they could turn it into cash. The reasons for not selling or trading in were “I’m worried about my personal information” (50.1%), “The procedure is troublesome” (21.1%), “The purchase price is low” (20.4%), and “It’s broken” (15.9%).

To coincide with the release of the iPhone 16, Geo Group is holding a buy-back campaign and sale at approximately 1,000 stores nationwide. Until November 10th, all iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Air Pods will be bought back at a 20% increase, and all Android smartphones and tablets will be bought back at a 10% increase. Until September 29th, smartphones and tablets at participating stores will be sold at a 10% discount.
