About a month after the announcement of the iPhone 16 series, the “iPad mini (A17 Pro)” was suddenly added to Apple’s lineup. It is positioned as a new model of the iPad mini series that has appeared for the first time in about three years, and as the model name suggests, it uses the A17 Pro processor. Like the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max that use the same chip, the iPad mini (A17 Pro) is also expected to support “Apple Intelligence”. Prior to the release of this new model, we were able to actually try out the iPad mini. We would like to share our review with you.
[Correction: When this article was first published at 10:40 a.m. on October 23, 2024, the iPhones using the A17 Pro were listed as the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, but the correct name is the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. We apologize and will make this correction.]
The suddenly announced iPad mini (A17 Pro). The new design is an upgrade over the previous model, and it also supports Apple Intelligence.
The design is identical to the previous model, and it is as light as a smartphone and easy to carry.
The iPad mini has been redesigned with the “iPad mini (6th generation)” released in 2021, and the home button has been redesigned. It has the same full-screen design as the iPad Pro and iPad Air. This is also followed in the iPad mini (A17 Pro). In terms of size, it is almost the same as the previous model, and detailed specifications such as weight have not changed.
In terms of design, it follows the previous model.
Compared to the 11-inch iPad Pro, it is extremely compact, and people with large hands can hold it tightly in one hand. The Wi-Fi + Cellular model I tried out weighed only 297g. Smartphones have been getting bigger recently, with more models weighing over 200g, so the iPad mini actually feels lighter. It won’t fit in your pocket, but it’s a tablet that you can carry around like a smartphone.

The top button and volume buttons are located on the top of the device, and the top button also doubles as a fingerprint sensor. This has not changed since the iPad mini (6th generation) was released three years ago. It is unfortunate that it does not support Face ID, which is familiar from the iPhone and iPad Pro, but for the iPad mini, which is often used in tablet style while holding it in your hand, Touch ID, which allows you to authenticate at the same time as turning on the screen, is more convenient.
The top button and volume buttons are located at the top of the device (when held vertically). The top button also doubles as Touch ID.
There is a USB Type-C port on the bottom. It looks the same as its predecessor, but the transfer speed has been improved to 10Gbps, which is advantageous when you want to import large data content such as photos and videos. This is the benefit of using the same A17 Pro processor as the iPhone 15 Pro series. The A17 Pro is equipped with a “USB 3.2 Gen 2” controller for the Pro model, and it can be said that the iPad mini can also take advantage of this.
It uses USB Type-C. It looks the same, but the transfer speed has increased to 10Gbps.
However, it does not support Pro Motion, which supports a maximum of 120Hz, and the display refresh rate remains at 60Hz. When it comes to the size of the iPad mini, the jerky movement when scrolling becomes a little more noticeable. This is partly because I use the 120Hz iPhone 16 Pro and iPad Pro (M4), but I was particularly bothered by the animation movement when displaying the list of apps. As with the iPad Air (M2), I would like the iPad to support 120Hz on models above, as the screen size is large.
When the animation movements are large and fast, some parts may lack smoothness.
What is the performance of the A17 Pro? Comparable to the iPad Pro with M1
