On October 28th (local time), Apple began distributing the latest OS for iPhones, “iOS 18.1.” This update adds new features including “Apple Intelligence.” It also addresses security vulnerabilities.
The update can be performed by going to “Settings” → “General” → “Software Update”.
Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPad with A17 Pro or M1 or later, and Mac with M1 or later.
It will be available in Japanese “next year,” but if you set the device and Siri language to English (US), you can use it in Japan.
The new features announced apart from Apple Intelligence are as follows (Apple Intelligence is summarized in a separate article ):

You can now hear announcements while recording a call and record phone or FaceTime audio calls in real time.

Camera controls now let you quickly switch to the front-facing True Depth camera (iPhone 16 series).

- Fixed an issue that could prevent digital car keys from unlocking or starting the car using passive entry after restoring from a backup or transferring directly from another iPhone.
- Fixed an issue that could cause the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro to reboot unexpectedly.

- The update addresses 18 security-related vulnerabilities related to Accessibility, App Support, CoreMedia Playback, CoreText, Foundation, ImageIO, IOSurface, iTunes, Kernel, Managed Configuration, MobileBackup, Pro Res, Safari Downloads, Safari Private Browsing, SceneKit, Shortcuts, Siri, Spotlight, VoiceOver, WebKit, and more.
- This time around, there doesn’t appear to be any vulnerabilities that “could be actively exploited.”
