iOS 18 adds a new feature called “Vehicle Motion Cues” to prevent motion sickness. If you are prone to motion sickness, be sure to learn how to use it.
What are vehicle motion cues?
“Vehicle Motion Cues” is a feature added in iOS 18 to prevent motion sickness. When enabled, multiple black and white dots are displayed on the iPhone screen. These dots use the iPhone’s accelerometer to animate to reflect the movement of the vehicle.
It’s a little difficult to explain how it works in words, but simply put, you can think of it as a function that visualizes on the screen the acceleration and centrifugal force of a vehicle, which are difficult for people looking at a smartphone screen to notice.

- For example, if a passenger is riding on a Shinkansen train and the train is slowly curving to the left, a centrifugal force acts on the passenger’s body to the right. However, if the passenger stares at the screen of their smartphone, they cannot see the change in the scenery and cannot accurately determine how much centrifugal force is acting on them.
- In this state, a discrepancy occurs between the centrifugal force information sensed by the semicircular canals (there is a large centrifugal force) and the information recognized from visual information (there is not much movement). The theory goes that this discrepancy causes motion sickness.
- Meanwhile, on an iPhone with vehicle motion cues turned on, centrifugal force is visualized as a large number of dots flowing toward the right.
- This allows the user to correctly understand the centrifugal force actually acting on their body while operating the iPhone at hand. Naturally, not only curves but also the actual acceleration when starting and decelerating is visualized, reducing the discrepancy in visual perception and reducing the risk of motion sickness.
