Have you ever had the experience of looking back at photos you took while traveling and wondering, “Where was this photo taken?” In times like these, the location information recorded on the photos is useful.

If the photo viewing app is compatible, you can check the locations where the photos were taken on a map and track your trip, making it fun to look back at the photos later.

Although location information from photos is very useful, if you are not careful, you may find that your home location is revealed when you share a photo of your pet taken at home. This time, we will introduce the settings for location information from photos.

What location information is included in the photo?

Digital photos contain a variety of information in addition to the data of the photo itself. The data stored in the photo is called “Exif” (Exchangeable Image File Format), and includes, for example, the date and time the photo was taken, the equipment used to take the photo, the shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, and exposure.

This data also includes the location of where the photo was taken. This data is not usually shown, but anyone can easily see it by using an app or checking the photo properties.

On Windows, you can check the location information from the properties

Therefore, if you share a photo with others that still contains location information, they can easily find out where the photo was taken.

Although I mentioned that your home location may be revealed from the photo, you don’t actually need to worry about that. Currently, major SNS such as X, LINE, and Instagram delete the location information contained in the photo when you post it.

For this reason, even if you post a photo of your pet taken at home, it does not mean that the location of your home will be revealed to the general public (it is possible that other factors besides location information could reveal the location, such as if the photo includes the view outside the window, but this is not the main topic of this article and we will not go into that here).

Depending on the method of data exchange, such as putting photos on a memory card and handing them over directly, the photos you pass over may still contain location information. In such cases, however, you will generally be assuming that the person is an acquaintance, so the presence or absence of location information should not be an issue.

However, if you don’t need it, it’s safer to disable location recording in the first place. Below, we’ll explain how to set up location recording for iOS and Android, and how to delete recorded location information.
