On July 17, Apple released the public beta version of its next operating system, including iOS 18, and began distributing it to users who have enabled “beta updates.” The public beta version is a mechanism for allowing general users to use an operating system still in development and accumulate feedback on corrections and other issues. The benefit for users is that they can use the latest OS features before the official version is distributed.
Previously, public beta versions required registration and other procedures, but from iOS 16.4 onwards, you can install the beta version on your own device simply by enabling beta updates in the Settings app. In that sense, even though it is a beta version, general users can easily try it out.
The public beta version of iOS 18 has been released. The photo shows a home screen customized using the OS’s functions. We checked out how easy it is to use.
Although it is easy to use, there is a possibility that bugs may remain, so we do not recommend installing it on your main device, but if you have a spare iPhone, you may want to try out the world of iOS 18. Here, we would like to introduce the features of iOS 18 based on the public beta version that has just been released.
iOS 18’s increased customizability also impacts usability
The public beta version of iOS 18 has started distribution, but unfortunately, it does not currently support the AI-based “Apple Intelligence”. Even if it were available, the language would initially be limited to American English, so Japanese users would not be able to take full advantage of it. Features such as the ability to change the tone of a sentence, “Genmoji” that generates emojis, and Siri that understands personal context will not be available until 2025.
Apple Intelligence is expected to be available later this year, initially in US English only, with Japanese support coming in 2025.
Apart from this, the selling point of iOS 18 is that it has become much more customizable. You can now freely rearrange apps and widgets on the home screen. Until iOS 17, apps and widgets were automatically arranged from the top left. Depending on the number of apps, there may be a gap at the bottom of the screen. This design has been followed for more than 10 years since the first iPhone.

Windows 10 support is about to end! How can I avoid update issues?
This automatic alignment is gone in iOS 18. Users can arrange app icons from the bottom up, or arrange them to avoid the subject of the wallpaper. If apps are lined up too much, it can be difficult to find the one you need, but with this method, you can place icons at a certain interval. It is now easier to thin out the icons on one screen, which also contributes to improved operability.
The automatic alignment function that arranged icons in order from the top left has been adopted, but it has been abolished in iOS 18. It is now possible to arrange icons more freely.
On the large-screen iPhones with “Plus” and “Max” models, it was difficult to reach the top of the screen, especially with one hand. Since the introduction of widgets in iOS 16, you could place them as “decorations” to move frequently touched icons to the bottom, but the downside was that they changed the appearance or covered the wallpaper. With the ability to freely place them, this problem has finally been solved. Although it is an OS update, it seems that it will also change the preferences for devices.
Putting icons at the bottom of the screen makes it easier to touch even on a large iPhone screen.
Although it is rarely mentioned on sites introducing iOS 18, the method of calling up widgets has also become easier. Starting with this version, app icons and widgets can be switched seamlessly, and you can go back and forth between the two states with one touch. After placing an icon, it is now more intuitive to make it a widget to make it stand out a little more, or to return the widget to an icon.
You can now seamlessly switch between icons and widgets.
App security has also been strengthened, and it is now possible to lock apps using Face ID and other features. Until now, third-party apps implemented this functionality individually, but now it is supported at the OS level. Among the pre-installed apps, apps related to privacy such as “Calendar,” “Mail,” and “Memo” can be locked. On the other hand, apps such as “Clock,” “Shortcuts,” and “Maps” were not compatible with Face ID. It is also possible to hide the app itself so that it can only be called up from the app library.
It is now possible to require Face ID authentication when launching an app. Some apps also have settings to hide their existence.
You can also change the icon color and customize the control center.
