“The iPhone SE 3rd generation is being traded in for 70,000 yen, which is more than the list price.” This post attracted attention on X (formerly Twitter). When purchasing a Pixel 8 series device, the Google Store is offering a discount on the price of certain devices on the condition that you trade in an iPhone or other device. On June 3rd, the trade-in price for the iPhone SE (3rd generation) 64GB exceeded the list price of 62,800 yen (tax included).
A post stating that the 3rd generation iPhone SE was being traded in for 70,000 yen, above the retail price, became a hot topic for a time.
When we checked the trade-in prices at the Google Store, as of 9:55 p.m. on the same day, the trade-in prices for the iPhone SE (3rd generation) 64GB were 18,625 yen, the 128GB model was 21,236 yen, and the 256GB model was 22,541 yen.
When purchasing a Pixel 8 series phone from the Google Store, you can check this price by selecting “Check trade-in value” → “Get a quote” → “Manufacturer” → “Model” → “Storage size” in the “Save money with high trade-in rebates on eligible smartphones” section. If your device “powers on, has no cracks, and the screen works normally” (the display lights up and the touch panel responds), select “Yes” and it will be displayed as the “estimated trade-in value.”
We also found a post stating that the trade-in price was over 70,000 yen as of June 2nd. Since this was a temporary display and the trade-in price was higher than the list price, it became a hot topic on X for a while.

Windows 10 support is about to end! How can I avoid update issues?
The trade-in and selling prices of used devices vary depending on market rates and the condition of the device, but they rarely exceed the list price set by the device manufacturer.
It is unclear whether this is related to the current incident, but on June 3rd at 2:05pm, Iosys Nagoya Osu store posted, “iPhone SE3 is selling at an incredible rate! Is the SE3 popular?” Since this was posted on the same date as a post about the trade-in value of the iPhone SE (3rd generation), it is likely that people who noticed the temporary increase in trade-in values rushed to buy used devices.

The iPhone SE (3rd generation) is a smartphone announced by Apple on March 8, 2022 (local time). It inherits the Touch ID-equipped home button, 4.7-inch LCD display, and 12-megapixel wide-angle rear camera from the second generation, but replaces the A13 Bionic processor from the second generation with the latest A15 Bionic.

The Pixel 8a, the latest model in the a-series of Google’s Pixel smartphones, which are often compared both domestically and overseas, uses the same Google Tensor G3 processor as the higher-end Pixel 8/Pro models, and is equipped with a 6.1-inch Actua OLED display with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The fingerprint sensor on the screen can be used to unlock the phone. The rear camera is made up of a 64-megapixel wide-angle camera with a 1/1.73-inch sensor (0.8μm pixel width) and a 13-megapixel (1.12μm pixel width) ultra-wide-angle camera.

Considering that the trade-in value of the iPhone SE (3rd generation) 64GB was over 70,000 yen, if you traded in the 3rd generation at the Google Store, you could essentially buy the Pixel 8a (128GB) for 72,600 yen for free. It seems that some people jumped at the opportunity.
