On July 30, Apple announced that satellite-based Emergency SOS is now available on all iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models.
This will allow you to contact emergency services even in places where mobile communication or Wi-Fi is not available. Emergency SOS can be used free of charge for two years from the same day, or for two years after activating the iPhone 14/15 series.
The steps to use Emergency SOS are as follows. First, press and hold the side key and volume key until the Emergency SOS slider appears. Then, select the emergency agency you want to contact. If you are out of range, you will be prompted to send an emergency text, so answer some simple questions via text. When answering, follow the instructions on the screen to point your iPhone into the air.
The answers to the questions, location information, iPhone battery level, and media ID are then sent via satellite to Apple’s satellite relay center, where specialists will contact emergency services such as 110, 118, and 119.
If you are out of range and cannot make an emergency call, select “Emergency Text”
Answer questions about the current situation
You need to point your device in the direction of the satellite.
Although satellites have small bandwidth and are more than 1,000 kilometers away from Earth, Apple’s custom-designed parts and software allow the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 to connect to the satellite’s unique frequency without the need for a large antenna. Apple also developed a text compression algorithm that reduces the average size of messages by a third to send them faster, allowing messages to be sent and received in 15 seconds in an open line of sight.

Even if you are out of range, you can be notified of your current location via the “Find” app
To use Emergency SOS and Find My Device via satellite, you will need to update to iOS 17.6, which was released on the 30th.
Users can try out the Emergency SOS demo by going to “Settings” → “Emergency SOS.” It connects to a real satellite without contacting the emergency service, so it’s a good idea to try it out to ensure smooth reporting in an emergency.
Emergency SOS on iPhone was launched in the US in 2014 when the iPhone 14 was released. It is currently available in the US, Japan, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.
