From May 30th to June 2nd, my family, including elementary school-aged children, attended the Pokemon GO (hereinafter referred to as “Pokemon GO”) event “Pokemon GO Fest 2024: Sendai,” held in Sendai City.

Although I generally enjoyed the event, I did encounter some issues with my smartphone and communication lines along the way. In this ” 5 Minute Guide to Using Mobile Data Communications ,” I’d like to report on the event in my own way, with a slightly different style than usual.

What to do if your app crashes?

I have participated in Pokemon GO events in the past, but this time I was only attending for a day, so I headed to the venue without any special preparations.

As for smartphones and communication lines, I gave my eldest son an iPhone SE (2nd generation) with Rakuten Mobile, and my second son an iPhone 8 with NTT Docomo (genuine) line. Neither device supports 5G, but I don’t feel any major inconvenience unless I use it in certain places in Tokyo or at times when communication is congested.

This event was held in a park (Nanakita Park) near the big city of Sendai. I headed to the venue with a carefree thought that “there will be no problem with communication.” However, it was a Pokemon GO event. Trainers from all over the country gathered, so I didn’t go there as usual .

When I arrived at Sendai Station by Shinkansen from Tokyo Station, the surrounding area was bustling with people who appeared to be event participants. This was probably because, in addition to the main venue in the park, there were other events to enjoy in various places around the city of Sendai .

The kids were excited that they could finally play the game. When we tried to start the game, we ran into an issue with my second son’s iPhone 8 where the app would crash almost every time he tried to join a battle .

It’s not the usual problem of the app responding poorly or the battle not starting due to heavy traffic, but rather that whenever you try to start a battle you are forcibly sent back to the home screen (on iOS, when the app is forcibly closed, you are returned to the home screen without receiving an alert).

I tried every solution I could think of, such as logging out and logging back in, or deleting the app and reinstalling it, but there was no sign of any improvement.

My second son was depressed because the app kept crashing.

This problem did not occur with other smartphones, so it seemed that there was a problem with either the device itself or the communication line. As I watched my second son get increasingly depressed while we were traveling, I realized that I had to do something about this.

So I decided to quickly set up the Pixel 8 Pro that I usually use and give it to my second son. This Pixel 8 Pro has Rakuten Mobile as the main line and mineo as the sub line.

We were able to play consistently not only in the main park venue, but also in various locations throughout Sendai city.

At the time, the Pixel 8 Pro was set up with Rakuten Mobile as its primary line and the MVNO mineo as its secondary line, and both in Sendai city and in the park that served as the main venue, the game played more stably than with the previous combination, and gradually people began to smile again.

My second son was smiling when he was able to play the game after switching devices (and internet connections)

Is the trouble still continuing?
