It’s already been a month since the iPhone 16 series went on sale. In our magazine, one of the five things you should do after purchasing an iPhone 16 series was to “buy a new case,” but I still haven’t decided on a case. In other words, I’m still carrying it around without one.

The editorial department took pity on me and sent me the “MagSafe iPhone 16 Silicone Case” saying, “Let’s try it out for now.” The retail price is 7,980 yen. Of course, this is no joke, so they also sent me the “MagSafe iPhone 16 Plus Silicone Case” and the “MagSafe iPhone 16 Pro Max Clear Case.”
These genuine cases sold by Apple are said to “seamlessly integrate” with the “camera control” adopted in the iPhone 16 series. In reality, will it affect usability? Let’s take a look.

Beautiful color and firm texture
The small letters on the back of the package don’t say how to use it… but rather the product name at the top, and the product name, that it contains one piece, information about the manufacturer, etc. at the bottom.

After peeling off the seal-like sticker and pulling the tab, a starfruit-colored MagSafe-compatible iPhone 16 silicone case (hereinafter referred to as the iPhone 16 case) appeared. Since you open the seal while looking at the back, the fact that you can see the front of the case in that state reminds me of the business etiquette when sending an envelope, which makes me feel serious.
I opened the box, pulled the tab, and the iPhone case appeared facing me.

I imagined it would feel soft and squishy because it’s called a “silicone case,” but it’s surprisingly firm. According to Apple’s product page, it’s “55% recycled silicone.” It’s not clear whether 55% of the silicone is recycled silicone, or whether recycled silicone makes up 55% of the entire product, but something other than recycled silicone must be what’s giving it this hardness.
When I twisted it, it was surprisingly hard. The outside is made of silicon, but it seems to use a harder material inside.
The inside of the iPhone 16 case is lined with microfiber instead of silicone material. This not only prevents stains caused by long-term contact, but also provides a moderate amount of cushioning, so it will likely protect your iPhone if it slips out of your hand.
The back of the iPhone is covered with microfiber, which is likely to help remove dirt.
The biggest feature of the genuine iPhone 16 case is the “sapphire cap” made of sapphire crystal that covers the camera control on the iPhone 16 body. This is a thin, conductive layer that looks like metal at first glance. When pressed from the inside, it bounces back, so you can see that it is spring-loaded, unlike the parts that cover the other buttons on the iPhone 16.

It is spring-loaded, so it bounces back lightly when pressed from the inside.
Now, let’s try putting it on right away.
