On June 7, Leica Camera announced the release of the iPhone app “Leica LUX,” which allows users to take photos that look like they were taken with a Leica camera and lens. The app will be available in two versions: a free version and a paid version that costs 1,000 yen per month (10,000 yen per year).

In “Aperture” mode, you can take photos that look like they were taken with typical lenses such as the Leica Summilux-M f1.4/28mm ASPH. and the Leica Noctilux-M f1.2/50mm ASPH. Equipped with an image processing engine based on machine learning and computational photography, it can simulate the impressive expression unique to M lenses.

- Using Leica’s unique color science, it offers several color gradations and film presets to reproduce Leica’s unique depictions. In addition to the “Leica Standard Look,” which uses unique image processing to create photos with different colors and contrasts than those taken with the iPhone’s own camera app, it also offers “Leica Classic,” “Leica Contemporary,” and “Leica Black-and-White.”
- There is an intuitive auto mode, as well as a manual mode that allows you to manually set the exposure and shutter speed, and the camera will be updated sequentially to add new lens profiles and the Leica Look function.
- The free version includes a mode that simulates the Leica Summilux-M f1.4/28mm ASPH., as well as “Automatic Photo Mode” and “Aperture Mode” that allow you to use five Leica Looks. The paid version, “Leica LUX Pro,” includes the modes included in the free version, as well as a mode that allows you to manually adjust exposure, focus, and white balance. At the moment, there are a total of 11 Leica Looks and five lenses available, and the company plans to expand the functionality by adding access to special Leica content and events.
