On May 15th, Apple released the fully redesigned “iPad Pro (M4)” and the “iPad Air (M2),” which now comes in two screen sizes. Having been using the iPad Pro, the third generation of which was the first to feature an M-series processor, I was debating between the iPad Air and the 11-inch iPad Pro (M4). The “tandem OLED” with two stacked organic EL panels significantly increased the contrast ratio, making the image more beautiful, and the thin and lightweight design and compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro were appealing.
In fact, it’s been about two weeks since I bought it, and I’m satisfied with the lightness and beauty of the display, as well as the agility of operation. The revamped “Magic Keyboard” seems to have slightly improved ease of input. On the other hand, compared to the 13-inch iPad Pro (M4), its impact seems to be somewhat diminished. Reviews of the 13-inch iPad Pro (M4) and the 11-inch iPad Air (M2) have already been published, so here I would like to explain the capabilities of the 11-inch iPad Pro (M4) while comparing them with those.
→ Which to choose: the new “iPad Pro” or “iPad Air”? The “differences” we found after trying out the actual devices We also tried out the all-new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro
I bought an 11-inch iPad Pro (M4) on the day it was released. I also bought a new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro.
While it is thinner and lighter, it is difficult to tell the difference compared to the 13-inch model.
The 11-inch iPad Pro is also thinner and lighter thanks to the use of an OLED display that does not require a backlight. Compared to the previous generation iPad Pro (4th generation), it is 0.6mm thinner and 22g lighter for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Regardless of size, the iPad Pro (M4) has the advantage of being easier to carry around.
The sides are 0.6mm thinner
The Wi-Fi + Cellular model weighs 446g. It’s 22g lighter than the previous model. There may be some margin of error, but when I measured it, it was 440g.
On the other hand, when compared to the 13-inch iPad Pro (M4), the effect of the thinner and lighter model compared to the previous model is somewhat limited, and it is true that the first impression when you pick it up is that it is a little difficult to tell the difference. The weight is slightly less than 5% lighter than the iPad Pro (4th generation), and while it is obvious when you compare the weight, the difference in thickness is a little difficult to notice. It lacks the “it’s so thin!” surprise of the 13-inch iPad Pro (M4).

There is a reason for this. Originally, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro had adopted “mini-LED” displays since the fifth generation. While mini-LEDs can significantly improve image quality, they tend to increase thickness and weight. The sixth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro was 6.4mm thick and weighed 684g for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. By adopting OLED, this weight could be significantly reduced.
In terms of thinness, the 13-inch model stands out. The 11-inch model did not offer such surprises.
The 11-inch iPad Pro, on the other hand, originally used an ISP display, and was not as thick or heavy as the 12.9-inch version. This limits the benefits of using an OLED display. Of course, performance has improved significantly in terms of image expression, but it would have been difficult to make a big improvement from the previous model in terms of thickness and weight. In that sense, there is little surprise when you pick it up.
Also, because the display is smaller than the 13-inch version, it is naturally harder to experience the beauty of the image. Although it is true that the image with its deep blacks is worth seeing, if you stand a little further away, the screen is small, so the previous generation model with an ISP display seems to be of sufficient quality. If you want to get the most out of the newly adopted technology, I felt that you should choose the 13-inch model over the 11-inch model.
I displayed a photo of a night view. The contrast with the bright areas was clear, and the blacks were also well-toned. However, the size is smaller than the 13-inch model, so it doesn’t look as impressive.
