During the company’s financial results briefing on November 1, KDDI President Makoto Takahashi stated that “Rakuten Mobile has a lot to learn from their initiatives.” This comment reflected his thoughts on the renewal of Rakuten Mobile’s communications app “Rakuten Link,” and President Takahashi also used RCS as an example to show the direction communications apps will take in the future.

On October 31, Rakuten Mobile announced that it would be implementing a chat-style AI service called “Rakuten Link AI” in the Rakuten Link app. The number of chat entries per time is limited to 50 (up to 500 characters per question), but subscribers of the “Rakuten Strongest Plan” can try out the AI generation for free.
The key point is that it is linked to various services of the Rakuten Group. For example, if you input “recommended Japanese sweets on Rakuten Ichiba,” Rakuten Link AI will automatically search and pick up several recommended Japanese sweets. If you input “recommended inns on Rakuten Travel,” it will suggest popular inns and help you make reservations. It can also display Rakuten Mobile data usage and billing information.
Rakuten Mobile’s “Rakuten Link AI” can answer various questions in chat format and is linked to Rakuten Group services.
Regarding the future direction of communication apps, Takahashi cited RCS as an example, commenting that “there is a great affinity between satellite communication and direct communication between smartphones, and RCS also has good affinity with Gemini, Google’s AI generation.” He stated his opinion that “the next challenge will be how to incorporate AI into communication services.”

- RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a messaging service standard that is globally standardized by the GSMA. It is a rich version of SMS, and can send and receive messages that include long text, images, videos, etc. Group chat with multiple people is also available.
- On Android, Google’s messaging service “Google Messages” supports RCS. Meanwhile, Apple’s iOS messaging app uses a dedicated iMessage, and can only send and receive SMS with Android devices, but on June 10th (local time), Apple announced that the “Messages” app will support RCS in iOS 18. KDDI President Takahashi expressed his expectations, saying, “It’s a big thing that it’s being adopted by the iPhone.”
- Among the messaging services supported by domestic carriers are “+Message” provided by NTT Docomo, KDDI, and Softbank, as well as Rakuten Link provided by Rakuten Mobile.
