The Digital Agency will release a “face-to-face verification app” that reads the IC chip on My Number cards sometime in August. Taro Kono, Minister of the Digital Agency, announced this at a press conference on July 23. The app will be used by financial institutions, mobile carriers, and other businesses to verify the identity of users in person.
There have been cases where counterfeit My Number cards have been used to verify identity by financial institutions and mobile carriers, so the aim is to provide stricter identity verification by reading the IC chip on the My Number card.
Minister Kono explaining about the face-to-face confirmation app
The My Number Card face-to-face verification app is downloaded to business operators’ smartphones and can be used. The app reads the My Number card’s face information using the smartphone’s camera’s OCR, making it possible to read the IC chip, and verify the identity of the person without entering a PIN.

“We spoke to financial institutions and mobile operators who carry out identity verification, and worked with relevant ministries and agencies to quickly develop the card reading app,” said Kono. Development at the Digital Agency has been mostly completed, and in July they will be conducting identity verification at business counters using the app as a field test with the cooperation of private businesses. The app is scheduled to be released for both iOS and Android in August.
Identity verification is performed by reading the information on the My Number card.
