Class Computer released a free “shadow map” on July 30th as a measure against the heatwaves. Using “PLATEAU,” a 3D city modeling and open data project for all of Japan led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the map creates and displays (patent pending) detailed 2D shadow shapes from 3D data of buildings, terrain, structures, etc.

This service displays the shape of the shadows cast on rooftops and cliffs at a specific date and time, and can be used for checking the amount of sunlight when searching for a property, considering where to install solar panels, setting up outdoor events, etc. It can be set up on smartphones, tablets, PCs, etc.

On an iPhone, you can access the Shadow Map app, click the “Share” button, then click “Add to Home Screen” to use it. On an Android device or PC, you can register it as an app by installing it from the browser menu.

Usage example for iPhone

Currently, out of the 210 PLATEAU maintenance areas, 24 are covered, including the 23 wards of Tokyo and Chino City. In order to gradually expand the service while maintaining its free availability, the company is seeking supporting companies and local governments. Supporting organizations will be given special benefits, such as being able to incorporate the shadow data into their own websites and use it, and creating shadow data for designated areas.
