Just the other day, the lithium-ion battery of my mother’s iPhone 12 mini expanded. Although it could still be started and charged, the back of the device was hot, so we decided that it was dangerous to continue using it like this.
The iPhone 12 mini has a swollen lithium-ion battery. Looking at the side frame, you can see that the display is floating.
According to iFixit, a US company that has been publishing disassembly reports on iPhones and other devices for many years, “swollen lithium-ion batteries can pose a risk of catching fire or exploding,” and if you cannot safely remove the lithium-ion battery from the device, they recommend “powering off the device, moving away from it, and contacting a professional repair company.”

Reasons why I want to continue using the iPhone 12 mini After much deliberation, I came to the conclusion that I should “replace the lithium-ion battery”
The biggest reason my mother chose the iPhone 12 mini is because the body is easy to grip. The iPhone 12 mini is a smartphone released by Apple on November 13, 2020. When it was announced, Apple touted it as “the world’s smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G smartphone,” and boasted that it was “smaller and lighter than the iPhone 8, which has a 4.7-inch LCD display, while also featuring a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR (organic light-emitting diode) display.”

- Indeed, if you want a small smartphone with the same iOS as the iPhone 12 mini, your only option as of 2024 is the iPhone SE (3rd generation), which has almost the same body size as the iPhone 8. The iPhone 12 mini is no longer on sale. Comparing the size and weight of the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone SE (3rd generation), the iPhone 12 mini is 0.1 mm deeper, 3.1 mm thinner, 6.9 mm shorter, and 11 g lighter.
- iPhone SE (3rd generation): 67.3 (width) x 138.4 (height) x 7.3 (depth) mm / 144g
- iPhone 12 mini: 64.2 (width) x 131.5 (height) x 7.4 (depth) mm / 133g
- When it was announced, Apple described the iPhone 12 mini as “the world’s smallest, thinnest and lightest 5G smartphone.”
- The iPhone 12 mini (left) has a larger display than the 4.7-inch iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone 8 (right), but is slightly smaller in body size.
- Because I like the small and lightweight iPhone 12 mini, I didn’t decide to buy the iPhone SE (3rd generation) with the same 128GB capacity as the iPhone 12 mini. By the way, the price of the 128GB iPhone SE (3rd generation) at the Apple Store is 69,800 yen in one lump sum, and the carrier version is in the 70,000 to 80,000 yen range.
- For these reasons, I decided to take my iPhone 12 mini to a repair shop in Tokyo not far from my home and ask them to replace the lithium-ion battery. The repair shop I went to this time was “iPhone Repair Workshop,” which repairs other manufacturers’ phones, including “AQUOS” and “Xperia,” in addition to iPhones.
