On June 10th (local time), Apple announced a new AI personal assistant, “Apple Intelligence.” New functions based on generative AI will be available in various situations in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. By the end of 2024, a collaboration function with ChatGPT from OpenAI will also be added.
The service will first be available in the US this summer. Compatible products will be the iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max, and Macs and iPads equipped with M1 or later chips. Other languages and platforms will be available in stages through 2025.
The evolution of Siri: Change device settings and take action in natural language
Siri’s language understanding has been improved, allowing you to use more natural conversation to control operations and complete tasks in open apps. For example, you can now use natural language commands like:
“Show me the file that Joz shared last week.”
“Play that podcast my wife sent me the other day.”
“What is the title of the book that your friend recommended to you?”
“Show me a picture of Stacey in her pink coat in New York” → “Edit this photo to make it stand out” → “Add this to my notes with Stacey’s biography”
“Take a video of the light trails at every moment with ProCamera”
When you use Siri, the entire screen lights up.
You can also use natural language to control app-specific functions, such as taking photos with the camera app.
Because it can understand the context of a conversation, it can also understand directives such as “there” when asking a question following an answer. To achieve this function, the inter-app processing (intent) function has also been strengthened.

You will be able to use natural language to ask Siri to change device settings or execute functions within apps. For example, you can ask Siri to execute what you want to do, even if you don’t know the name of the function, such as “How can I send the message I’m writing now tomorrow?”

More advanced scheduling features and more
In addition to stored photos, schedules, and files, Apple Intelligence also uses the content of exchanged messages and emails as sources for information searches.
For example, if the time of a meeting you have scheduled on your calendar changes, and you start to worry about whether you will be able to make it to your daughter’s play that you have scheduled afterwards, Apple Intelligence can understand who your daughter is, the details of the play she sent you, and the traffic conditions from the meeting location to the play venue, and then present the situation to the user.
Other possible uses include:
“What is the best time to pick up my mother when she arrives by plane?” → The system compares flight details and real-time flight status with emails exchanged with my mother to display the latest arrival time.
Apple is promoting the new Apple Intelligence, saying, “This is just one example of how Apple Intelligence makes Siri more powerful and more personal. It’s a complete game changer, and 2024 marks the beginning of a new era for Siri.”
